    School Grade Camps

    School Camps 2016

As most of you know by now, a large focus of ours is within the school market offering a premium Leadership Development school camps aimed at children between the ages of Grade 4 right up Grade 12. Leadership Development is something we hold very dear to ourselves and pride ourselves in delivering school grade camps that have taken the market by storm.

It all began in 2010 with us running our very first camp held in Tokai Forest, Cape Town. From there we began to develop a program that would encompass key issues we found were lacking within the youth of today and it became our mission and goal to equip our campers with the tools and knowledge needed to reach all scopes of leadership. We began refining our program and adding in elements which would become an integral part of our program in years to follow. We shifted our focus and pin pointed area’s we would like to see our campers excel in and developed the program to focus on clear concise Communication, Trust, Motivation, Team Work and above all, Leadership!

By focussing on these key area’s we found that the outcome of our school camps became better and better and we are known throughout the Western Cape as the “go to” Leadership Camp.

Let’s talk about our venue for a second.

After many years of refining our program we decided to deal directly with a partner who wanted to grow with us and build a safe, secure and adventurous camp site in an area where campers can grow on a personal level overcoming challenges and obstacles in an environment where nature meets technology which allowed us to deliver a premium Cape Town based school camp. The venue at which we host all of our school camps is known as Buffalo Drift which is based on the banks of the Berg River a mere 1H30 drive from Cape Town’s CBD. We decided to up our numbers from 50 to 110 and brought in state of the art Pine bunk beds complete with thick comfortable mattresses. We then went onto to installing Wifi at the lodge and in even bought in 5 brand new canoe’s. Our focus shifted from “roughing it, Bootcamp style” into offering a comfortable camp site where students can feel at home and teachers can feel like they’ve just received a free getaway for 3 days. That’s right…FREE. Our teachers aren’t charged a cent to come on camp with us and believe us they’re well looked after!

We admire the teaching profession and because we do, we want to give back as much as we can. Our teachers are treated to 4 x private rooms complete with a large double bed, ensuite bathrooms and only the finest filtered coffee and array of tea’s and fresh juices to keep them well satisfied. We ensure that teachers need not bring along any bedding or crockery/cutlery on camp, we provide that to 😉 Should our teachers need a little R&R away from our energetic campers, we’ve even built Private Luxury Tents and placed them on the banks of the Berg River a mere 5 minute walk from the lodge. Our tents are more so Glamping than they are camping and come complete with a private kitchen, four posted king size bed and enormous bathroom along with a private balcony overlooking nature at its finest.

Ok so we know that our teachers are well looked after…so what about our students? Thanks for asking 😉 Our students reside in comfortable double bunk beds with access to hot running water at all times and enough showers and bathrooms to easily accommodate up to 150 people.  Students are required to bring along a comfortable sleeping bag and pillow along with their crockery and cutlery and we’ll handle the rest. We toyed with the idea of campers not needing to bring along cutlery and crockery, however we feel that a sense of responsibly is pivotal to the growth of our campers who are still very much in the developmental phases of their lives. Who said washing their own dishes doesn’t build character?

Ok so we’ve heard about the lodge now let’s talk program! Our program as mentioned is focussed around building leaders through healthy competitive team building tasks. Each camp starts off with an electric introduction with our campers then breaking away into teams to work on their team names, team flags and of course their war cry! We then break for lunch with our chef’s working tirelessly to ensure that we have wholesome food readily available to children at all times. Our menu has been designed throughout the years to ensure all campers are well fed with us taking in account all campers dietary requirements. We then break away into our Ice Breaker activities which work on a minute it to win it rotational basis before we dive into the 45 minute outcome based activities themselves. From Blow Dart and Archery Target Shooting through to GPS Amazing Races, Raft Building and Ultimate Survivor Master Chef, we really do encompass the best of the best to ensure our campers walk away with a sense of victory and growth on camp!

With the sun setting comes a brand new energy on camp in which a large bon fire is lit, our music system is turned up and the almost endless supply of hot chocolate and braai’d marshmallows are served.  Once we have all enjoyed some of the latest Billboard 100 chart topping singles and the most delicious hot chocolate, campers can then expect to dive into our night program which changes each night with Stalk The Lantern (the crowd favorite) and interpretive plays coming to the forefront!

On the third and final day of our school camps we wrap up with group and individual debrief/breakaway sessions in which students are encouraged to share their camp experience with the rest of the school. It’s important for us to understand what campers learnt on camp and help guide them into taking those lessons learnt and applying them into their school and sporting careers moving forward. We encourage all learners to really think back to the first minute of camp and express how they have grown or what they have learnt about themselves as individuals and their team mates as a whole. Certificates and prizes are then awarded to the Comic on camp, the Best Team on camp and of course the overall Leader of camp. Teachers are then treated to their very own prize giving as well In which we take a moment to reflect on how much time and effort they have put in to ensure that their school was given the best possible camping experience money can buy.  After all it’s our objective to ensure that we meet the requirements and expectations of the school we’re working with and tailor make our program to suit their needs accordingly.

Should this camp sound like something you would like to book your school into, then please feel free to e mail us on capetown@bootcamp-sa.co.za or call us directly on 082 455 6723 so that we may send through a full proposal and quote, schedule a meeting and walk you through every minute of camp.

We’ll leave you with this… “great leaders don’t set out to become leaders, they set out to make a difference.” -Unknown
